Expedia Group, Booking, Airbnb, and other OTAs shelled out nearly $17 billion in marketing efforts in 2023, up 20% from the previous year.

Hotels Doing it Right

Leela Palace Hotel in New Delhi exemplifies the essence of “surprise and delight” by demonstrating exceptional care in mitigating a guest’s unfortunate vacation experience. 

A guest had their luggage lost by an airline and Leela Hotel went way above and beyond and handled all communications with the airline, picked up their bag, and went so far as to make a suitcase-shaped cake for the guest. This wasn’t the property’s fault, or even directly related to them.  However, they took the opportunity to earn a guest for life and an untold amount of goodwill and social praise.
